HMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin), also known as menotropin, is a medication and research compound containing a 1:1 mixture of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) activity. It is extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women or produced recombinantly to stimulate reproductive function.
Uses and Functions
- In Women: Stimulates ovarian follicle development and triggers ovulation in fertility treatments like assisted reproductive technology (ART).
- In Men: Used off-label to stimulate testicular development and support spermatogenesis (sperm production), often alongside hCG.
- In Research: Acts as a dual-gonadotropin model to study cellular receptor signaling and reproductive biology
